Tread Lightly
Treading lightly is all about doing what you can to reduce your impact on the environment.
Sanitarium is currently implementing a dynamic environmental management program. Some of the key focuses of this program include energy conservation, water conservation, waste reduction, and reducing air emissions.
Here are a few steps we have taken towards environmental sustainability so far:
- Water Recycling: Sanitarium's Advanced Water Recycling Plant at Berkeley Vale recycles and reuses manufacturing wastewater. This project was in part, sponsored by the DECC and is estimated to save 65 million litres of water a year, just under a third of the total water used annually by Berkeley Vale Factory (as per 2007 usage data).
- From January 2008 Sanitarium began converting its sales car fleet from 6 cylinders to 4 cylinders . These vehicles use less fuel than the previous larger models, and have a considerably lower greenhouse and air pollution impact, which is better for the environment.
- Sanitarium is actively undertaking energy and water conservation programs throughout its five sites in Australia.
- Sanitarium is an active signatory to the National Packaging Covenant (NPC) in Australia, and the Packaging Accord in New Zealand. Our action plan can be viewed on the NPC website.
